Coming soon! Garway's own website to carry both historical and current information. Starting with details of the recent archaeological dig on Garway Hill, the site will be developed soon by a group of enthusiasts - we'll link direct from here once the site is up and running!
Garway is a large parish which borders onto the River Monnow (and therefore onto Wales). It is an agricultural area, with over 30 working farms still in operation. There are four main centres of population, none of them very large:
Garway Common: Here you'll find the school, the pub, the post office and the village hall (as well as the large attractive common itself). The pub is The Garway Moon which is normally open every evening from 7pm and weekend lunchtimes. Please check regarding meals before visiting.
Garway Hill: There are a good number of houses here, but the hill itself is the main reason for visiting this part of the parish. Make your way to "The Sun" (sadly no longer a pub) where you can either park (carefully and considerately please) or take the left hand (bumpy) track and park near the top gate - don't block it though. It's a fairly easy walk to the bunker at the top where you'll have stunning views in all directions - there are many other walks on the hill as well.
The Turning: Near the church you'll find a group of old cottages and one or two newer houses. There's a Baptist Chapel too, and the old village Smithy (now private). Both the road from the Turning past the Church and the road on towards Kentchurch will give you wonderful views across the Monnow valley.
Broad Oak: Here you'll find a garage and filling station, with a useful shop too. There's a Methodist Chapel and a Roman Catholic Church, and what used to be the Broad Oak pub (now a private house).
