About us...
Situated
in a
beautiful part of one of the most rural areas in England,
and close to the Welsh border, this is a lively, forward looking group
of parishes and communities.
This is a place where community
is important, and where the churches,
the parishes, the farms, the villages and the individual people are
closely interwoven.
If you are a local, this website aims to keep you up to date with local information, with our forthcoming church services and community events and with ways in which we are tackling our future. For visitors, we hope it will give you a flavour of the area and some ideas about what you'll find when you come here. We aim to keep the website up to date - it's updated at least once a week and sometimes daily.
If you'd like somewhere to be quiet, to pray or to see and touch history, you'll find all our churches open every day - there are some stunning things to be seen both inside and outside the churches and visitors are always welcome. And do come and join us at any of our regular and one-off events, for worship on Sundays or at one of our quiet services of healing and meditation.
Palm Sunday "Pax Cake" tradition
The ancient tradition of distributing little biscuits known as 'Pax
Cakes' to those who come to church on Palm Sunday is re-enacted each
year at Hentland church. It originated in the 16th century when
parishioners were not getting on in the villages of Hentland, Sellack
and Kings Caple.
Lady Scudamore gave five shillings and ninepence to buy cake and ale to be consumed in church on Palm Sunday to ensure peace and reconciliation between neighbours before they took their Easter Communion the following week.
By the 19th century the ale had disappeared but small 'Pax Cakes' impressed with the motto "God and Good Neighbourhood" are still distributed to all who come on Palm Sunday afternoon to Evensong at Hentland Church. This year the service at Hentland is at 3.00 p.m. on April 1st and everyone is warmly welcome.
