Brief background
Njarange Area Project Kenya (NAPKENYA) began in April 1991 as an informal pastoral care and development initiative by Rev. & Mrs. M. M. Nthukah in response to the calling to serve God and the needy communities as well as a deep concern for the poor in Njarange village and other villages in the Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) of Kenya. Within the years the latter initiative grew in terms of organizational legitimacy, areas of operation and beneficiary, nature of the community programmes and projects, General administration and management, partners and its multi-purpose concerns.
The organization is now a registered Kenyan National Non Governmental Organization as from 9 September 1999 (Reg. No. OP218/051/97140/966) and in the year 2001 was registered as a Charity using the same name in England and Wales (Reg. No. 1085415).
The main aim of the NGO is to facilitate the holistic transformational development initiatives started and undertaken by the poor and marginalized village community (people, animals and environment). The current initiatives are facilitated through the five community programmes identified as: Education and Population; Agriculture, Water and Environment; Community Health; Micro Finance and finally the Welfare and Relief.
The preferred operation local areas are within the needy villages of the five Districts namely: Mbeere, Meru South, Isiolo, Mwingi and Tharaka in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Due to the limitation of monetary and technical resources the current NAPKENYA operations are in Mbeere (Evurore & Mwea Division), Meru South (Locations: Rubate, Kamwimbi and Kiera South) and Isiolo (Location: Ngaremala and 2 Manyatta at Archers Post) Districts. The total population benefiting from the ongoing programmes is about 40 000 people.
Nature of the Problem: Nature, poverty and HIV Aids combine to make life difficult for the people of Njarange (ASAL) Area Kenya. The rural marginalized People, Animals and Environment of Njarange area (Arid and Semi arid areas) experience all the disadvantages of poverty, isolation and disintegration. The support of Community development and Welfare Relief projects with money, technical skills and equipment can make a huge difference to the way people can handle the difficulties they face.
The technical and Financial Resources: NAPKENYA networks with other development agencies in terms of technical services and on terms of financial resources it depends entirely on voluntary contributions from the local community and the partner donors to achieve any of its objectives, which are directed entirely at improving the situation of the poor and suffering in the needy villages within the areas of operation.
Administration and Management: NAPKENYA is managed by the Board of Directors who comprises of seven members. They work in consultation with the Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) who consists of 21 members – the elected executives of the seven main community Groups benefiting from the NGOs programmes. The members of the board include: four Clergy, one educationist and two professionals in Financial Management. All are committed and responsible people. The organization has constitution and operation policies.
The NAPKENYA NGO has an office and its field operations managed by both the full time and volunteer staff who work with the local village Community based Self Help Groups and the Local institutions. The staff occasionally, works in collaboration and networking with Government ministries and other development agencies within the operation catchments. There is less Administration cost involved. It will be seen from the objectives that the holistic transformational development of the marginalized population of these districts is of the key importance to the Board members and vital in terms of the pastoral ministry.
The mission : A Committed facilitation for the realization of the well being of the Needy and Marginalized village community.
The Objectives:
1. To promote and facilitate an effective solution for the spiritual, Social and economic holistic development needs and welfare of the poor and marginalized people.
2. To empower the poor and needy families to have access to their vital needs.
3. To facilitate the community based projects and institutions to achieve their goals so as to offer efficient and effective service to the community.
4. To involve people in undertaking socio-economic community activities in their localities through participation involvement.
These objectives are achieved through the following nature of projects namely: Education, Water, Health, Agriculture, Environment, Welfare, Relief, Population and micro-economic enterprises. They are undertaken through the five main community programmes: Education and Population Programme (EPP); Agriculture, Water and Environment Programme (AWEP); Community Health and HIV Aids Programme (CHHAP); Micro Finance and Sustainability Programme (MFSP) and finally the Welfare and Relief Programme (WRP).
It is difficult to set absolute priorities within the detailed objectives (see programme table) as each community will have particular needs according to its location and local resources, but there is a general need to focus particularly on water supply and storage (Domestic and irrigation use), Health and Micro economic enterprises.
THE PROPOSITION
Nap Kenya needs the involvement of western grant making Trusts, Foundations, NGO’s / other Aid Agencies, Churches, Companies, individuals and institutions to realize its objectives for the needy people who are suffering due to poverty, HIV Aids and drought. The support towards NAPKENYA NGO Community Programmes and Operations range from Monetary support to sharing of Expertise skills, Literature resources, Project Equipments and tools, Vehicle and motor cycle, Working Holiday Volunteer missions and Gap year volunteers, Consultation and liaison services.
