Hereford Gospels for Today

Hereford Gospels for Today

7 Oct 2025 • General

Dear Friends,

Next year we will mark a remarkable milestone – 1350 years since the foundation of the Diocese of Hereford. As part of this “Year of Celebration”, Hereford Cathedral will shine a light on one of its greatest treasures: the Hereford Gospels, a beautifully preserved Anglo-Saxon Gospel book, and a less famous cousin of the Lindisfarne Gospels.

To celebrate, a new handmade book has been commissioned: The Hereford Gospels for Today.

Our hope is that this will be filled with contributions from across our communities – artwork, stories, calligraphy, poetry, testimonies – responses that reflect how the Gospels continue to inspire us today.  It will be dedicated at Pentecost 2026 and then travel around the Diocese for many to see.

I warmly invite you and your parishioners to take part. Could you share a personal story of faith, a piece of artwork, or a written reflection that connects your life today with the Good News that inspired our forebears?

How to contribute:

  • Submissions must be A4 or smaller, on ordinary paper (80gsm)
  • They may be originals (if you are happy to gift them) or good quality copies/photographs
  • Please include a short explanation if possible
  • Send by 31 December 2025 to: Cathedral Library, 5 College Cloisters, Hereford, HR1 2NG or email: HerefordGospels@skypilots.co.uk

This is a unique opportunity to bring together voices old and new – to show that the Gospel which shaped our ancestors is still transforming lives today.

I've attached some further information, and a poster to explain it too, but I do look forward to partnering with you on this exciting project.
